Artist Statement
‘“Whimsical” and “happy” are words often used to describe my work. I am drawn to vibrant colour palettes because they are pleasing to the eye and the soul. To create calming pieces, I infuse light from various sources such as the sun, moon, and illuminated houses. Together, these elements reflect the emotions I aim to convey to the viewer.
A consistent theme throughout my practice is a deep connection to Nova Scotia landscapes. I enjoy incorporating enchanted elements into my work, transforming ordinary buildings into extraordinary ones. These imagined spaces are rooted in place and invite viewers into a gentle, narrative-driven world.
My process often begins with a clear concept or image, followed by a loose sketch that allows intuition and energy to guide the work as it develops. This approach keeps the work playful and responsive. Painting with acrylics and drawing are grounding practices for me, helping me process emotion and return to calm and joy.
I draw inspiration from artists such as Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, particularly their use of colour, shape, and playful composition to guide the viewer through a visual narrative. Like them, I am motivated by storytelling, connection to community, and a sense of place.
I value direct connection with audiences and regularly share my work through local markets, exhibitions, and community collaborations. A highlight of my practice includes organizing From Farm to Tableau in 2024, a project that paired over twenty Nova Scotia artists with local food producers to celebrate food culture and raise funds for school food programs.
This body of work, developed over the past nine years, is accessible to all ages and rooted in community, imagination, and care. I hope my work offers a moment of pause — a space where viewers can feel calm, curious, and uplifted.
